Oscar als beste Dokumentation 2013

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez, 1942 in Detroit geboren, ist ein Musiker und Song Writer, der 1970 und 1971 zwei erste Alben veröffentlichte. Die Erwartungen waren sehr hoch. Musikalisch und textlich von hoher Qualität, mit einer faszinierenden Intensität in der Stimme, dachten die Produzenten, sie würden ein echtes Talent in die Top 100 bringen. Und dann der totale Flop, ein echter Ladenhüter.

Rodriguez zog sich nach den sehr mageren Verkaufszahlen 1971 in sein Privatleben zurück und hatte bis in die 90er verschiedene Jobs. Nur sporadisch nahm er noch an der Musikszene teil, bis er erfuhr, dass er in Südafrika eine große Fangemeinde hat. Auch in Australien verkauften sich seine Platten gut.

In Südafrika verstanden viele Hörer und Fans seine Musik als Prostestsongs und so wurden seine Alben zu Ikonen des Apardheidprotestes. Durch die auf dem Höhepunkt der Apardheid weitgehende Isolation des Landes konnten die Fans nicht viel über ihr Idol erfahren und so sponnen sie sich viele Legenden über Leben und vermeintlichen Tod von Sixto Rodriguez zusammen. Rodriguez selbst erfuhr ebenfalls erst Jahre später, Ende der 70er, von seinem Erfolg fern der USA.

In den 90er endlich stellten sich zwei südafrikanische Fans der Aufgabe, den wahren Rodriguez zu suchen und mit den Legenden aufzuräumen.
Von dieser Suche der beiden Fans nach Rodriguez und seiner sehr eigenwilligen Musikerkarrier erzählt der Film fesselnd und unterhaltsam.

Inzwischen ist auch der Soundtrack zum Film erschienen und seine beiden Alben...

...wurden neu auf CD und Vinyl gepresst. Absolut sehens- und hörenswert.
